I have found that working for a company forces you to conform to the corporate culture… So does that make it a cult or a culture? Not all cults are bad, nor all cultures good.
People join cults not because people are crazy, but because they have two kinds of wishes. They want a meaningful life, or they want to be taken care of. A social culture is an organized way of life which is based on a common tradition and conditioned by a common environment. There are some key difference though?
- Compliance with the group
- Dependence on a leader
- Avoidance of dissent
- Devaluation of outsiders
- Cohesiveness of the individuals
- Dependence on collaboration
- Civil discussion of new ideas
- Uplifting and encouragement of others
In this episode, we will discuss how groups on social media can be either cults or culture, depending on how the content presented is being created, moderated and discussed.
Points for discussion… A cult has its own culture, but a culture doesn’t have to include a cult? You can “join a cult” but can you * “join a culture?” You can “get out of a cult” but can you * “get out of a culture?”
